What Is Flex-Shaft Drain Cleaning?

A flex shaft uses a flexible rotating cable inside a protective sheath. A specialized chain knocker or cleaning head spins inside the drain. Depending on the pipe and attachment, the rotating head can break apart grease, soft buildup, deposits, sludge, and certain root intrusions.

Our goal is not just to get water moving for the moment. When conditions allow, we want to remove as much of the material causing the restriction as practical.

The Right Tool for the Right Drain

We Don't Use Flex Shaft on Every Clog

A flex shaft is an excellent tool, but professional drain cleaning is not about using the same machine on every call. Pipe material, age, condition, access, blockage type, and line size all matter.

Sometimes a traditional cable machine is the better choice. In other situations hydro jetting or a sewer camera inspection may be appropriate. If a pipe is broken, collapsed, badly offset, or structurally failing, drain cleaning cannot repair the underlying damage.

Our job is to diagnose the drain and choose the method that makes sense for that plumbing system—not simply sell one type of drain cleaning.

Does a flex shaft actually clean the walls of the pipe?

With the correct chain knocker and suitable pipe conditions, the rotating chains can expand toward the pipe wall and remove material around much more of the pipe circumference than simply opening a path through the middle.

Can flex shaft remove tree roots?

It can remove certain root intrusions with the proper attachment, but roots entering a sewer usually indicate an opening in the pipe or joint. Cleaning restores flow; it does not repair the opening that allowed the roots to enter.

Is flex shaft safe for PVC?

Different cleaning heads are designed for different pipe materials. We select the attachment and technique based on the actual piping and its condition.

Will flex shaft fix a broken sewer pipe?

No. Drain-cleaning equipment removes obstructions and buildup. A collapsed, cracked, separated, or severely damaged line may require repair or replacement.

When do you recommend a sewer camera?

A camera is especially useful for recurring stoppages, roots, unknown pipe conditions, or suspected structural problems because it can help identify why the blockage keeps returning.
